I got defeated by someone with a lot less soldiers and weapons, I don't understand this bloody game at all.

there's a random elemtent. Also, there's two sorts of weapons, attack and defense ones, so if you have lots of attack weapons but no defense ones you will get defeated by people who are weaker at attacking than you are.

I had 65 defence weapons, they had 18 attack weapons - they got 382,000 gold off me and killed one of my soldiers!

Such a slow start too, take ages for an ordinary person to get going.

yeah, 1000 gold is far too little to be starting with. They should have started people with at least 5 troops and maybe 10,000 gold; enough to buy a small upgrade, or a few weapons.
