Saw an interesting rainbow yesterday - as well as the usual bow, there was the slightly less usual second bow, opposite colours and higher up, but there were even further bows superimposed on the original, giving it a look of a really bright melange of reds and oranges, with purpleness underneath. Pity I had no camera!

On a less good note, I was awoken at just after four this morning by a loud, penetrating and rather unsettling scream from a neighbouring flat! I heard nothing else apart from the from the front door to the block closing a wee while later, but I certainly took a while to get back to sleep. Hmmm.

Tis a shame that most cameras make rainbows look naff unless you get lucky & get the perfect time/angle/lighting ...

Erk, dodgy noises at night are a great source of weird scariness - we have one in our street that sounds like either one of those klaxon air raid siren things (but quieter, or far away), or a dog/wolf howling - neither of which seems that likely. Hmmm.

Of course, I could point out that the bow you call the 'second' bow is actually the third, and you can't see the second, but that would make me some sort of maths geek, and heaven forbid.... :)

(You noticed, btw, that the sky in between the two bows is a little darker than the sky on either side? That's my favourite bit of a double rainbow.)

Nah nah nah! The third bow you are talking about was the second one I mentioned! That's why I was so impressed with extra ones :O)

Nooooo - the first bow, a given. The second bow, you can't see, and is directly behind your line of sight, so doesn't 'exist' as such, but it's there due to, y'know, refraction and the likes. The third bow is the one above the first where the colours go the 'wrong way round'. The fourth would be behind you again, the fifth in front of you, etc etc. You never see the even-numbered bows, because if you turn around you're breaking the line of sight etc anyway.
