Muse were excellent last night.

Somewhere between Mozart, Wagner, Black Sabbath, Abba and Metallica (and a little Status Quo) come this excellent band, and bombast after bombast just blew me away! The reviewer for the Scotsman just implied that they were Radiohead wannabes...what a load of balls! There are certainly similarities, but they are a very different beast. Highly recommended.

Am feeling a little guilty as I realised after arrival that I should have checked to see if [livejournal.com profile] silverclear wanted to come. Sorry! I'm crap *sigh*

No, really, I'm going to kill you in your sleep.

I never sleep.

*extreme envy*

What tracks did they do? Was it mostly new album or did they mix in the old style as well?

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They did quite an even mix across the three albums, including all the well-known stuff. I don't know them well enough to be able to name some of the more obscure album tracks, but it was a ninety-minute set, so they were able to cover all bases. The intro to New Born was sweet anticipation!

[identity profile] kymara.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
they have 4 albums ... or were you not counting the new one? Showbiz, OoS and Absolution, then the new one, Black Holes and Revelations, from which they played at least the title track. I don't have the two newest but I think I'll get at least BH&R now, last night was fantastic!

I *think* they played Sunburn, and Cave, Showbiz, New Born, Bliss, Plug In Baby, Time is Running Out, Hysteria, plus probably more from the albums I don't know. They opened with Knights of Cydonia and as I said they played Starlight at some stage.

Oops, I forgot about Showbiz :op

it sounds incredible.
MUST get tickets next time! MUST!

The last two albums, are, i think the best. Absolution is very 'epic' / 'melodramatic' / 'apocalyptic' style. Really worth getting as it's only about £8 online these days. I bet Starlight was brilliant live. Oh, and New Born! Wow. Hope someone puts a video up online!

[identity profile] silverclear.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
heh, I did want to go, but chose not to get a ticket because I would prefer to see them in a smaller venue. also, already busy.

I can't understand why anyone would say they are anything-wannabes, there's a big difference between having influences and being a wannabe. *scowl*

I think he was writing from that preconception, and I'm also assuming he gave Radiohead five stars on Tuesday and felt he couldn't give Muse as high a rating as that simply because of that attitude. Both shows were indeed excellent, but the comparison was unnecessary.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Fancy seeing them at the SECC then?

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, 7th of November I think!

[identity profile] andabusers.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh I like Muse a lot. They're surprisingly melodic for an indie band.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What I've heard and now seen of them, they're more metal than indie! Generally indie bores me witless.

[identity profile] andabusers.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, really? I've only got the one album and I can't even remember what it's called. Yeah, indie also usually bores me too (which is really saying something, because I like contemporary folk :P).

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Origin of Symmetry? I say they're more metal, mainly because they're just bigger, louder and much more technical and guitar-driven than a standard indie band. They do come from that genre, but seem to reside somewhere above the two...

As for contemporary folk, well at least the vocalists probably sing properly, no nasal Richard Ashcroft-style nonsense :p

I completely failed to register that gig until it was way too late.

I may well go to the Glasgow gig in November, so if you want to join forces for transportation, let me know.

As for saying they're Radiohead wannabes, I've heard that before, so wouldn't be surprised if the reviewer didn't even turn up (wouldn't be the first time). How anyone could listen to 'Knights of Cydonia' and make any reference to Radiohead is beyond me.

p.s. I've got back a couple of woolen things from Maggie, one of which I think belongs to you.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2006-08-28 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll probably be up for the November gig if I'm in town.

I can sort of understand where the Radiohead idea comes from, as when I first heard New Born I thought it was them, but otherwise he was indeed stretching the point to breaking.

Can come collect the woolly thing at some point, although I'm away until next week. I could even collect the cabinet too unless you've become attached to it, as the large piano in my room has now been removed. Storage fee has been earned :o)
