John Inverdale would blow goats if they'd only let him

Well I saw Portishead last night, which was a particularly enjoyable gig. It's one of the only gigs I've been to where the previews of the new material easily stood up to comparison against the old stuff. The harder edge to some of the songs also appealed, at times it was approaching industrial strength, and comparisons to Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan and OMD wouldn't be entirely out of place for some elements, as well as similarities to latter-day Radiohead. All good anyway, and the juxtaposition of harsh electronics and Beth Gibbons's mournful vocals was as stunning as ever.

Was slightly strange in that I was at the gig with my face painted, only because I hadn't had time to remove the stuff after doing designs for Beltane in the afternoon.

In other news, I've just entered myself for the Great Edinburgh Run, and until last Wednesday I hadn't been running for about six months - a combination of laziness and sprained ankle put paid to that, but I managed to do okay on the road, so I'll survive yet. Foolishly, I only realised later that I'm also playing in the Ed City/Mavericks korfball tournament, so that morning will be after six hours of running about the previous day followed by a large piss-up. Oh god...

We were going to go and see Portishead, but they had sold out. But from what you're saying, their new stuff sounds like what I would want to hear.
