1.8 tracks in, and the Metallica is going down very well. Well produced mass-appeal metal but edgy enough to keep a grind-freak like me interested.

I've only heard a couple of tracks and have to say I think the materlial is better than anything they have done for years....

But....

And it's a big but....

A gargantuan arse if you like...

The production is far beyond shocking. Smashed to buggery, brick walled. No dynamics. Yeah, I'd be proud to produce something as complex as that, but I'd also leave some space to breathe, it's just fatiguing not in a good way.

The loudness war rolls on. *sigh*

I believe the mastering engineer is doing his best to distance himself from it and assigning the blame to the mix... the mixer is probably getting ready to pass it up the chain to the producer.

I've heard something about clipping being a problem, and I don't know enough to confirm that, but I agree that the sound is nasty at times.

I just have to ask how? Surely someone checked?
