What's all this "leave anonymous comments and tell me what you think of me" crap?! Tell me what you think of me if you want, but have the courage to say it to my metaphorical face if you must! Pah!

I have to say I completely agree with you.

I guess the idea is that people sometimes don't like to tell you what they really think of you because it might affect the friendship/relationship,

This misses out two important points:
1. Good friends tell you the truth. It's the job description.
2. Lots of people think lots of things about me. I need to know who it is that holds a particular opinion before I can respect it.

Well, they certainly should do.

It isn't always easy though, as it requires quite a lot of emotional security and self-knowledge on both sides. It might be worth qualifying the statement to:
Good friends tell you the truth when it's important and when you don't appear to have seen it for yourself already.

friends tell you the truth when you nag them enough.

good friends tell you what they think is best for you - if they have the courage.

Yes, that's a good way of putting it.
