Edinburgh Mavericks Korfball Club are looking to introduce new players to have a go at the sport, and maybe to join us in our pre-season tournaments through the summer. We are currently planning to play tournaments in Edinburgh (our own!), Stockholm, St. Andrews and are looking at other venues such as Rotterdam and Luxembourg.

Please get in touch with me if you would like more detail, and yes, it is completely mixed, and designed so that both genders get an equal chance.

What is korfball exactly?

A Dutch sport originally, teams are eight-a-side and are equally mixed.

It's something like basketball or netball, having elements of both, the main object is of course to score baskets.

It's fair in terms of of gender since men can only mark men and vice versa.

I used to play basketball in school and college and loved it. Consider me interested. When do you play and how long for etc?

(I note the beginners session is next sunday - could be up for that, but wondering what normal games/practice is?)

Games are normally either Saturday or Sunday, and the usual format is for three teams to play each other one after the other just to save on travel costs etc.

Today for example, we played our final games of the season against two of the other top teams: They played each other at 2pm, then we played them in turn at 3pm and 4pm. Games are 44 minutes long.

Normal practice at the moment is on Sunday afternoons, although it will become less regular over the Summer to save on hall fees. There will be some outdoor sessions, and there may be ad hoc sessions on the Meadows on warm nights. The main thing to keep us interested over the summer will be the tournaments we enter, then pre-season training should get back up to speed around September, although the exact time of the week that will be is under review.

Remind me closer to the time and I might give it a go on the Sunday. Can't guarentee I'll be any good - been years since I played basketball, but it'll be a laugh trying.
