If you know what you're doing why not move up a level to another deck. But then a well-used deck that's used to you will read better until you break in the new one. I am in such an indecisive mood today...

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
aye - trouble is I'm not completely savvy with the first one either!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/dee_/ 2004-01-21 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh well they're both equal then. Doesn't matter if one is a gift - pick whichever you're drawn to. I'll be a girl & say take the pretty one, hehe, being as Waite's pretty common, though it is quite a classic. Are you random enough for the Rock one?

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably!

Would it be unreasonably sarcastic of me to suggest that you do a tarot reading to help you make the decision? :o)

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
oh very good :)

[identity profile] random-redhead.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do either of them *talk* to you? its not a poncy question honest. Or get a new one. Probably stick with Ryder Waite untill someone gives you one or you find one that really works for you. I have many decks. Actually they are probably looking for a new move, what do you like in a Deck? Pictures or nothingyness? I like things I can *read* but the nice art ones are pretty.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
At the moment I prefer pictures, but that's more because I'm not very good! As for whether they talk to me, I don't think I know them well enough. I need to spend much more time at it.

Going to the Auld Hoose tonight?

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-22 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Erm...no! Had other plans unfortunately. I'll be there on Friday :)

Was it a good night?

[identity profile] random-redhead.livejournal.com 2004-01-22 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
YY! had much fun, avoided being maimed by darts :-) On to Citrus on friday?

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-22 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Erm...never thought about it - will see how the birthday celebrations go. It's Kynon's piss-up.

[identity profile] random-redhead.livejournal.com 2004-01-22 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
was that who's birthday shenanigans I was told about last night? or is it someone else as well? I can't remember! eek!

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-22 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
iT MAY WELL HAVE BEEN! Oops...there certainly should be a good few people there anyway.

[identity profile] love337.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about where you come from, but over here, I notice a high superstition among gifted decks. Some say they're the only kind of deck that one should read from, those are the ones with any real insight, etc.

That's just how it is here, though. I had to end up buying my own though, heh.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I mentioned it - I suppose I just need to make the effort to get my head round that one.

[identity profile] fliss1982.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If you picked one, go with that one. I've had cards bought for me but I didnt chose them and so I didnt feel as comfortable with them as the ones I picked. I like the Medicine Woman deck; they're pretty and Goddess-ey.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...so much conflicting advice! As much as I'm comfortable with one set, it would be nice to use the others just because they're so random!

[identity profile] xljx.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Drifting off the main subject a bit, from what I've been reading, would no-one recommend buying a friend a deck of tarot cards for his birthday then? I've found a place that sells lovely looking decks of cards, all colourful, shiny and shimmery. He's into Tarot and already has a deck that he uses but thought a new deck might be a nice present he'd appreciate, now I'm not so sure...

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither am I! It's a nice gift whether he uses it or not I suppose...

[identity profile] xljx.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm, suppose, maybe I should take him with me and let him pick? kinda ruins the surprise element though...

incidentally, this is the guy who I went to the Spiritualist church with.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah right, Maybe it would be better to just get him what feels best?

[identity profile] fliss1982.livejournal.com 2004-01-21 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd take him to pick the cards with you. The advice on this thread IS conflicting but my opinion is
-Buying cards which are actually going to be USED is not like buying someone a tea towel. They have to feel comfortable with the cards.

[identity profile] lilitufire.livejournal.com 2004-01-22 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Try both - see which works for you. I bought the Thoth tarot a couple of years ago, it sat in my drawer until I followed a hunch and gave it to [livejournal.com profile] lanfykins. She's been going ooh and ahh a lot. :)

I generally use the Cat People deck by virtue of long familiarity,(you are allowed to barf now *grins*) but have had some interesting experiences with other people's Dragon Tarot desks.

Ultimately it all comes from you, so it depends which imagery speaks to you more.

[identity profile] cheekbones3.livejournal.com 2004-01-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks - I think I will stick with the Rider-Waite pack - it is the one I am comfortable with.
