Feb. 22nd, 2005 12:18 pmKen Livingstone won't be apologising for insulting a journalist who was pissing him off, and just happened to be Jewish. Damn right! Don't pander to the "oh we're so insulted" brigade - they can sod off and find something else to do, preferably out of earshot.
Even better that he severely laid into the "newspaper" group that owns the London Evening Standard (also coincidentally the Daily Mail) about their extreme right-wing tendencies, saying that they were extremely unqualified to bleat about anti-semitism.

Date: 2005-02-22 04:15 pm (UTC)Very basics - left wing = socialist, pro-benefit, inclusionist type parties which exist to help people and to be generally nice, to hand money out where it is needed and to give good public services. Extreme left = communism, where everyone works for everyone else and no personal gain is encouraged, although this concept is more Utopian than what really happens. Right wing is more pro-individual, supporting lower taxes, encouraging enterprise, promoting business, and not worrying so much about needy individuals - if a country earns a lot of wealth, then these people will logically be supported by their peers. Nationalism is a right-wing feature. Extreme right are fascists and totalitarians.
Labour are centre-left, although used to be more left, Lib-Dems are to the left of Labour, Conservatives (Tories) are moderate right wing although push more extreme right sometimes. Socialist parties are obviously left, and parties like the UK Independence Party and Kilroy-Silk's new bunch Veritas are further right than the Conservatives. Extreme parties, BNP far-right (full of nazi-sympathisers/skinheads), a small Communist party is far left, and there are many other smaller parties, as well as the regional nationalist parties, which appear to me to be straddling the centre ground. Northern Ireland politics I'll spare you from for the moment!
