Election Musings
May. 6th, 2005 11:55 amI'm quite pleased with the way the Lib Dem vote swung against Labour, but I'm actually surprised at the way that it really didn't swing in many Tory seats, and in fact disappeared to some extent in these areas. This effect is rather patchy though - probably local campaigning effects.
More locally, it was a shame that Edinburgh South didn't quite go to the Lib Dems, although the overall swing in the city was very encouraging, as was the vote for the Greens. As I speak another Lib Dem seat comes in.
All in all - good that Labour's majority is significantly reduced - reasonable backbench revolts should actually be effective now. Good that the Lib Dems have continued their rise (past 1923 levels), and secured more seats and significantly more votes, annoying that people still seem to often vote for Tories as a direct reaction against Labour in a thoughtless manner.
Totals so far:
Labour 9,492,687 votes, 353 seats
Conservative 8,685,454, 196
Lib Dem, 5,934,622, 61.
If that doesn't encourage some form of PR in your minds, nothing will.
On a completely different subject,
bellabex asked yesterday whether anyone else had problems with a continuous music soundtrack in their head. I refer you to the current music and ask WHY?????!!!!!
