Okay, LJ geeks, I need your help.

I have a problem with my PC, in that every time I insert a blank disk to burn, it immediately reboots Windoze (XP). I've updated Nero, that didn't seem to help, and I've also downloaded (apparently) a driver for the DVD player, but appears to be an exe and a bin file, whereas the updater is looking for an inf file.

Hence, confusion.

I've read stuff about possible memory overflows and out-of-date drivers, the driver thing is my main focus right now.

Have you got Norton? Disable the drive in its scan options.

'puter competent friend says:

if the problem just recently started, its probably *not* a firmware issueits not a driver, its the firmware for the dvd burner
he runs the exe, selects the bin file, and it updates the hardware firmware on the dvd drive
an inf file is a driver and is almost always a generic atapi device driver
for dvd players/burners anyways
optical drives are typically non-volatile, as in they typically don't crash the computer like that
if i had to take a stab in the dark based just off that information, i'd say its an error in the registry, that when the 'you've inserted a blank disc. what do you want to do with it' dialog is supposed to pop up, its borked
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/155217
i'd start there
disable autorun, reboot, and try again and see what happens

I sorted it! I think it was a duff reference in the registry. I had a clean-up, and suddenly it worked :o)

I've used them before without problem, and I'm usually pretty careful checking to see if they're borked before I use them.
