Snow

The pile of snow in the carp park at work that's been there since the end of November is at last in peril of completely melting. Over the weeks, it's shrunk from about twenty foot high to its current paltry two feet.

If it survives to the weekend, it might last another week at least, but I suspect this mild spell may finish it...

Argh, I had a really good seed of a post floating round in my head this morning. By now it's completely left me, it may return in the future, we shall see.

In other news, what's the best way to be able to display information from and to query a spreadsheet on a web page?

Remind me not to read comments on BBC political blogs. Actually, any widely-read forum of public opinion. The unremitting negativity and unreasoned bombasts are frustrating and annoying. I generally find it's not worth wading through so much shit to find the occasional nugget.

This commentary, allied with the constant hypocrisy of politics gets on my tits in many ways as it obscures most of the useful stuff that's going on at every level. Oh woe, here's to the demise of soundbite politics, and myxomatosis infections for tabloid editors.

Rumour has it that ASBOs are to be replaced by the SuBo. Gangs of feral youths, on failing to disperse, will be targeted by the middle-aged songstress, although it's not clear whether she will actually sing at the yobs, or will just grin at them while standing nearby.

A local ned, who would only give his name as "Syco", was quoted as saying "Arrgh, fucken eyebrows, ah'm awa frae here".

Looks like I'm moving downwards a bit as far as I can remember.

I realised this afternoon that I think about a lot more blog posts than I actually end up writing.

Here's one that often comes up when I'm sat on the bus home from work (not cycling in this bloody weather)...

Traffic lights are gradually being phased (aha) from incandescent bulbs with coloured filters to LED arrays.

This isn't hugely interesting I'm sure, but anyway I'll ramble on. My brain is telling me that the LED lights (quite apart from turning on and off more abruptly) are coloured subtly differently, although when I actually really concentrate on this, I think they're actually simply more vivid. They also appear more variable - not sure if this is age-related.

I had the impression that the green LEDs were a more minty-green colour (a tinge of blue I suppose), but the old ones are definitely minty too. I assume they've matched the colours pretty well actually.

Maybe it's not the vividness, it's the intensity. Maybe they're the same thing, except that intensity actually has a scientific definition, but I'm not sure vividness does.

This is maybe why I don't blog so much, these thoughts rarely go anywhere useful.

Oh yes, forgot to mention, I loved the weather in 2010! Brilliantly proper winters just like they used to be (or were in 1981/82 anyway). Never seen so much snow or cold - very long-lasting cold at the start of the year and powdery snow that laid for weeks, and at the end of the year, deep and fun snow, and vicious frosts on top. All very exciting, I'm not awaiting the next batch given that there's a good three months of potential cold to come!

I'll be on Popmaster in a wee while, so get onto Radio at abouit half past to see if I collapse and fail!

I have a couple of Dreamwidth invitation codes if anyone wants one by the way.

Pete Postlethwaite dead? How will films manage without a small gruff Lancastrian managing to look strangely apposite in whatever random role he's playing?

Actually, it just turns out that I missed the html options for the cross-posting footer.

Seems to me that Dreamwidth's posting blurb that appears under posts when they are ported across to Livejournal has become more interesting, although I'm testing whether it works for me in a few seconds' time.

2010 review upcoming, probably before the continuation of the review of the last decade. Mind you, I've been mentally trying to prepare a review of last year, and I'm struggling to think of much to write about - it seems like it was a relatively monochromatic sort of year. As soon as I get some sort of context to grasp, I'm sure all sorts of big events will pop into my head.

Right now, I'm off to listen to the cricket in bed for a while. Toodle-pip!

I'm impressed that the 4'33" EP has eight tracks, including seven remixes. I wonder if I could get a remix fee for that too.

In other news, we've got a new kitchen installed in the main after a great stint by the boys to get in installed in time for the following day's Christmas dinner round here.

Aforementioned Christmas dinner was excellent, this was proved by the large amount of wine drunk and the apparent lack of hangoivers for all concerned - I was excellently perky the following morning.

Finished work until some time next year, this is good.

Going to do some wall-filling this morning, then finish my shopping duties.

Been enjoying the weather, although if it eases in my general area on Monday, that would be appreciated. Never have I seen so many days where the temperature has failed to make it above freezing, certainly becoming a winter to remember!

As per usual, you may have noticed, my blogging's been awful, my life never seems to be that interesting, or interesting enough for others to read, but then who am I to decide such things? Anyway, if I don't see you tomorrow, have an excellent Christmas boys and girls, don't do anything I wouldn't do.

Looks like the snow got bored, it's hailstones now.

Great fun watching people trying to get their cars out, I miss such entertainment these days, used to be good as we lived on a hill back ome, so a quick freeze was great for car abandonments...

Definitely failing at blogging at the moment, but I'll try to pull my socks up before the end of the year.

As for recent times, my mum was here last night, we went out and got minced which was fun, and paid for it this morning. No idea what's happening with work yet, should find out more details this week, should also get lots of data to play with so I can process my favourite survey of the year.

What else? Not listening to enough music as ever, although lots of good stuff is sat awaiting such things. Hopefully getting a new kitchen soon. Had a cold recently, first one in many months, felt like it rebooted my system a bit strangely.

Also, TV advertisers, it's still fucking November. Just thought you should know that.

...starts here! Very much looking forward to meeting my sisters off the train tomorrow (they're here until Sunday), watching the start of the 4 Nations Rugby on Saturday morning (live on BBC1!), playing two korfball matches on Sunday lunchtime, and finishing it all with the Grand Prix on Sunday evening.

See you in the pub!

I'm wondering if it's cold enough to close the window in the flat yet.

Been put in a boardgaming mood after reading a post by [personal profile] andrewducker who mentioned Dominion and Formula D, neither of which I've played. I could always resurrect my online Blood Bowl teams, but they (being PBEM) don't have the same sort of pleasure as a one-off sit-down gaming session with a bunch of like-minded geeks.

I've still never won a game of Settlers of Catan either. Apart from Carcassonne (which needs more than two players to be particularly enjoyable), I've not been much good at keeping up with the best games of the last decade or two, of which there appear to be many.

Anyone got any board game events planned, pleas invite me along, I'll come along and be over-competitive and a very satisfying beat if that's the sort of person you need! Given that it's such a passion of mine, I really don't do it often enough. Same goes for games (hur hur hur).
